ROCHESTER - Reserve John Velez-Rivera poured in eight 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 26 points, Arnold Fripp delivered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Monroe Community College handled the visiting Jamestown CC Jayhawks, 77-58.
Monroe, which is ranked sixth in the nation, is 24-3 overall and 11-1 in Region 3 Division II while JCC falls to 13-15 and 4-9.
The Tribunes started the contest on a 14-3 run, though JCC, which was led by Tyreek Jewell's 15 points and five rebounds, did manage to keep pace from there, maintaining that same 11-point deficit all the way to halftime, 36-25.
That would be as close as the Jayhawks could get, however, as Monroe pulled away thanks to a 25-9 surge during the second half's first eight minutes.
Along with Jewell, Omar St. John netted 12 points to go along with three rebounds, while Edward Newell (five rebounds) and Michael Forrest (two steals) each chipped in with eight points in the losing effort.
JCC will be looking to get back into the win column when it plays again at 3 p.m. at Alfred State College in a Region 3 Division II game.
