Trojans’ Powers Wins Two Events, Anchors Winning Relay

MARYVALE - Jordan Powers of Southwestern Central School turned in an outstanding performance in the Class C swim meet at Maryvale High School on Saturday afternoon.

Powers, who was named the most valuable swimmer, won two events and anchored the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay, leading the Trojans to a third-place finish with 235 points. The only teams ahead of them were Cleveland Hill with 310 points and Royalton-Hartland with 235.

Frewsburg was fourth with 225 points, Alden was next with 177 points followed by Akron with 163 points, Barker with 132 points, Panama with 121 points, Eden with 114 points, Fredonia with 108 points and Franklinville with 98 points in the 16-team field.

Powers won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.17, Reed Porterfield of Fredonia was second with 2:10.62 and Chase Gregory of Frewsburg was seventh with 2:20.24.

Powers also claimed the 500 freestyle with a 4:54.52, Shawn McDonald of Frewsburg was fifth with a 5:27.68 and Alex Beckerink of Southwestern ninth with a 5:35.

Powers was also the anchor of the 200 freestyle relay group that came in second with a 1:34.86 that was bettered only by Royalton-Hartland's winning time of 1:34.67. Making up that relay team with Powers was Jacob Cotter, Skye Smith and Carl Shoup.

Frewsburg was seventh with a team of Gregory, Josh Peterson, Johnson and Ollie Koehler that was timed in 1:38.36.

Porterfield recorded a first place for Fredonia with a 1:03.34 in the 100 breaststroke. Patrick Yuchnitz of Panama ninth with a 1:13.83.

Earlier, Ray Fortney of Panama won the diving and remained undefeated with 370.90 points and Josiah Blanchard was second with 312.05 points.

Tage Johnson of Frewsburg was second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.75), Skye Smith of Southwestern third (1:59.15) and Cotter of Southwestern seventh 2:01.76.

Johnson also was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.05), Smith fifth (1:01.75) and Konnor Bryant of Southwestern eighth (1:04.04).

The Bears were also second in the 400 freestyle relay (3.33.70) and that unit was comprised of Gregory, Johnson, Peterson and McDonald.

Yuchnitz, Parker Roberts, Clayton Manwaring and Palmer of Panama were fifth (3:45.69) and Shoup, Collin Hanson, Bryant and Beckerink seventh (3:49.17).

Jake Brown of Fredonia placed fifth (53:01) in the 100 butterfly, Gregory of Frewsburg sixth (53:08), Peterson of Frewsburg seventh (53.67) and Cotter of Southwestern eighth (54.18).

Palmer was sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.89) for Panama while Brown finished eighth (24.0).

In the 100 backstroke, McDonald was sixth (1:02.60) and Frewsburg teammate Kohler seventh (1:04.32).

The top 24 in Class C, Class A and Class B advance to the Section 6 championships on Friday and Saturday at Clarence High School.
