KIANTONE - A tanker carrying 7,600 gallons of diesel fuel overturned early Monday morning, shutting down traffic on Route 62 for more than 12 hours and sending its driver to the hospital.
The Kiantone Independent Fire Department was summoned at 6:26 a.m. after a United Refining tractor trailer lost control on the shoulder of the road and veered into a ravine. The rollover took place between Kiantone Road and Route 60. The driver, William D. Fisher, 46, of Erie, Pa., was transported to WCA Hospital for minor lacerations and neck and back pain.
The tanker truck was on its way from Warren, Pa., to Fredonia when the accident occurred, police said.
The Chautauqua County HAZMAT team responded, as did firefighters from Frewsburg, Falconer, Ellery Center and Russell, Pa. State Police out of the Jamestown barracks and members of the United Refining spill response team also responded. Fire officials said less than 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the overturned tanker.
