Chautauqua County can truly take a bow this month. Two major sporting events filmed locally have given our region a chance to shine on national television.
The recent Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular televised on NBC on Jan. 6 featured some of the top names in both sports. Filmed at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena on Dec. 15, the production featured 2012 all-around Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas along with other 2012 Olympic competitors Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, John Orozco, Danell Leyva, Jonathan Horton and Jacob Dalton, as well as 2008 all-around gold medalist Nastia Liukin.
The lineup of figure skaters included world champions and 2010 Olympic ice dance silver medalists Davis and Charlie White, current U.S. singles champions Jeremy Abbott and Ashley Wagner, two-time U.S. champion Alissa Czisny, world ice dance bronze medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani, 2012 U.S. silver medalist Adam Rippon and up-and-coming elite skater Gracie Gold.
Also performing during the show was the Fresh Beat Band of the Nickelodeon show with the same name, and Ross Lynch of Disney's "Austin and Ally" with his band R5. Olympic champions Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci and Peggy Fleming hosted the show. The glitzy production was filmed before a sold-out and wildly cheering crowd in the arena. We commend the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena for an outstanding job on this event.
Coming up next weekend, NBC viewers will get a chance to see a different side of Chautauqua County, when the final event of Jack Link's Major League Fishing's Summit Cup will be televised at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Major League Fishing crew and support staff have been raving both online and on the Outdoor Channel about the beauty of Chautauqua Lake as an extraordinary fishing destination, as well as the hospitality they received during filming here last August.
Please join us Saturday for a Major League Fishing watch party at Bellini Lounge at Chautauqua Suites as we celebrate this tremendous event. The party begins at noon with free lunch and a cash bar. This event is sponsored by the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, Chautauqua Marina, and Webb's Year Round Resort. You can register online at chautauquachamber.org or by calling the Chamber at 484-1101.
It is easy when you live somewhere to take it for granted. It becomes a little more exciting when you look at the assets in your own backyard through the eyes of others. We should remind ourselves more often that the quality of life we enjoy in Chautauqua County is a privilege, and that our area's natural beauty, sports and recreational opportunities, and offerings in the arts and education truly do make us special. We are very lucky to call Chautauqua County our home, and to show it off this way for the rest of the country.
