STOCKTON - An 83-year-old Fredonia man escaped fast-moving floodwaters Wednesday, but was issued a traffic ticket for his troubles.

John C. Vanscoter, 83, of 74 Central Ave., Fredonia, was charged with failure to obey a traffic-control device after police say he disobeyed two barricades on South Stockton-Cassadaga Road and drove southbound into approximately three feet of water at 4 p.m.

Vanscoter's vehicle entered the deep water and began to be swept away with the fast current before the Stockton Volunteer Fire Department and the Chautauqua County WET Team rescued Vanscoter and his passenger, 82-year-old Constance B. Vanscoter.

The two were taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk with non-life-threatening injuries.

Vanscoter will appear in Town of Stockton Court at a later date.
