OLEAN?- Students from several regional high schools participated in the New York Regions 11/13 Distributive Education Clubs of America 2013 competition at the Jamestown Community College Cattaraugus County campus recently.
Overall winners were Shae Smith of Salamanca Central School, first place; Jill Magara of Salamanca Central School, second; and Noah Wright of Southwestern Central School, third. The two-part competition included a timed written exam and an impromptu role playing activity.

Visiting high school students participated in the “Amazing Business Race” as part of the DECA competition held earlier this month at Jamestown Community College’s Cattaraugus County campus.
Hornell Central School: Naomi Snowden, first; Isabel Dunning, second; Sadie Davis
Olean High School: Destin Sweeten, first; Morgan Smith, second; and Kelsey Stimlinger, third.
Salamanca Central School: Shae Smith, first; Jill Magara, second; Marisa Huffman, third.
Southwestern Central School: Noah Wright, first; Rahim Karimi, second; and Adam Girts, third.
Wellsville Central School: Azure Decker, first; Cat Spare, second; Sarah Murphy, third.
Whitesville Central School: Valerie Wallace, first; Sylvia Billings, second; Erika Lewis-Ellison, third.
As part of the event, the students also participated in the "Amazing Business Race," a team activity focusing on diverse business skills as well as JCC's academic programs in accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, medical office technology and office technology.
The winning team included Catie Drake and Erica Romanos, Hornell; Destin Sweeten, Olean; Andie Hill, Salamanca; Zack Cunningham, Wellsville; and Trevor Coleman, Whitesville.
DECA engages more than 185,000 high school students in 5,000 chapters, located in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guam in networking and curriculum enhancing programs focused on marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Winners of regional competitions have the opportunity to advance to state and then international competitions.
The regional 2013 competition was coordinated by Walter Zeznick, business teacher at Salamanca High School.
