January 14, 2013

BUSTI - Lakewood-Busti Police officials said they have identified the source of a loud "boom" heard throughout much of southern Chautauqua County.

Sgt. Paul Gustafson of the Lakewood-Busti Police Department said a 20-year-old male admitted to shooting three 6-pound boxes of Tannerite with a rifle around 6:15 p.m. Sunday in a ravine on Lawson Road in the town of Busti. Tannerite is sold at sporting goods stores, and is sold as an accessory to target shooting.

"This product is very dangerous and should be handled accordingly," Gustafson said in a news release.

No charges have been filed at this time.
