NORTH EAST, Pa. - A slow start for the second straight game was the main reason that the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fell to Mercyhurst North East in NJCAA Region 3, Division II on Saturday afternoon.
''We only scored two points in the first 10 minutes but we gave up only eight points,'' said JCC coach George Sisson after the Jayhawks lost to Mercyhurst-North East, 67-37.
''With 10 minutes left we were behind by just 10 points and then point guard Taylor Storer fouled out and they started hitting their shots,'' stated Sisson.
The Jayhawks sank 13-of-50 overall from the field and 0-of-6 from the arc. ''They took away our three-point shot,'' said Sisson.
Lenay Simms had 13 points in the first half when the MNE grabbed a 27-16 edge.
Simms added another 13 after intermission to finish with 26 points followed by Christian Holmes with 11 points.
JCC had only one player in twin digits and that was Ashley DePane with 10 points. Alex Smith added eight.
Mercyhurst North East sank 25-of-61 attempts and made 6-of-14 on 3-point attempts. Both teams had problems from the foul line as each made only 11-of-21.
The hosts (1-1, 9-4) are the preseason favorite to win Region 3 while JCC, now 13-5 and 1-1 in Region 3, will be off until Saturday when it travels to Erie CC.
