The Chautauqua County Vegetarian-Vegan Society will hold two meetings in January, one in Jamestown and one in Westfield.
The Westfield meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the Jamestown meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13.
The speaker at the Westfield meeting will be Dr. Sherri "Sam" Mason of the State University at Fredonia, who will speak about plastic pollution. She conducted the first survey of plastic pollution on the Great Lakes last summer and she will discuss her findings with the group. She is an associate professor of chemistry at SUNY Fredonia and also serves as the coordinator of the Environmental Sciences program and the Sustainability Coordinator for the FACE Center. She is one of the founding members of Fredonia's Sustainability Committee and initiated "Earth Week" in 2008 to heighten awareness about environmental issues. The meeting will be at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St..
The speaker at the Jamestown meeting will be Janet Forbes, who works at the Chautauqua County Health Network as the project coordinator for the Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play project. The initiative is paid for by the state Department of Health and is focused on chronic disease prevention through policy, system and environmental change to increase access to healthy food and opportunities to be physically active. She will highlight initiatives to increase access to healthy food through development of community and school gardens, farmers market expansion, Farm to School, Farm to Table and St. Susan Center Giving Garden. The meeting will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown.
The menu for the both dinners will be healthy pot luck. Those coming are invited, but not required, to bring a nutritious dish to share which will serve between eight and 12 people, as well as the recipe. The meal should be vegan, with no meat, eggs, milk, butter or other dairy products used in preparing it, and should be organic if possible.

All meetings are open to the public. Those attending do not need to be vegan or vegetarian. Meetings are open to anyone interested in learning about healthy eating and living. The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian, vegan or raw food lifestyles.
