Fans in the Mayville area ought to be pretty pleased.
The unbeaten Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds (6-0) find themselves at No. 3 in Class C, the top spot among any team in Section 6.
The only squads in the state ahead of them in Class C are No. 1 Alexander Hamilton of Section 1 (6-0) and No. 2 Little Falls of Section 3 (5-0).
But the Lady T'Birds aren't the only area girls team to have a lofty place in the polls. In the same classification, Frewsburg (7-1) checks in at No. 10 after capturing its own holiday tournament title last week.
Meanwhile, Sherman (6-0) is fresh off a championship in the Jock Shop Holiday Shootout at Jamestown Community College and finds itself No. 5 in Class D. Senior Elle Reed is leading the way for the Lady Wildcats, averaging better than 30 points per game.
The teams in front of Sherman are South Kortright of Section 4 (6-0), Elba of Section 5 (6-0) Fort Edward of Section 2 (7-0) and Hammond of Section 10 (7-0).
Pine Valley (3-2) is the remaining area ranked team, also in Class D, and is tied with Sackets Harbor of Section 3 (5-1) at No. 15.
The remaining Section 6 teams in the polls are Hamburg (5-1), No. 20 in Class A; and Wilson (4-1), No. 10, and Olean (4-2), No. 20, in Class B.
The other top-ranked teams in the polls are Ossining of Section 1 (6-3) in Class AA, Holy Names of Section 2 (6-0) in Class A and Irvington of Section 1 (8-1) in Class B.
