Mary Elizabeth Smith, 92, of Lutheran Social Services, formerly of Jamestown and Dewittville, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012.
She was born Jan. 31, 1920, in Falconer, N.Y., the daughter of Earl and Pearl Eldridge.
Mary attended Stockton Union School and graduated in 1937. She continued her education at Hiedleberg College, Buffalo School of Art and Buffalo Beauty School. In her earlier years, she was an accomplished artist. She also operated a beauty shop in her home on Forest Avenue for several years.

She married Gilbert S. Smith in 1941. She was very active with the Newcomers, Remocwens, DAV Auxiliary and several bridge clubs. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jamestown. She was an avid bridge player, swam regularly at the YMCA and loved taking care of her properties on beautiful Lake Chautauqua. Even at age 89, Mary could be seen riding her lawn tractor on her 4-acre property.
She is survived by her two sons: William and Gregory (Linda) Smith of Jamestown; daughter Patricia Dymond of St. Cloud, Fla.; six grandchildren: Troy D. Smith (Cherie) of Dewittville, Brett Shafer of Jamestown, Jamie M. Smith of Jamestown, Adam M. Smith of Melbourne, Australia, John (Getta) Dymond of Birresborn, Germany, and Jennifer Sacks of Kissimmee, Fla.; six great-grandchildren: Nathan (Laura) and Tiffany Smith of Tuscon, Ariz., Chad Marino of Jamestown, Yvonne (Marco) Blau of Birresborn, Germany, and Morgan and Marlee Sachs of Kissimmee, Fla.; and two great-great-grandchildren: Gavin Troy Smith of Tucson, Ariz. and Calvin Blau of Birresborn, Germany.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert in 1983; her son, Robert P., in 2012; and her granddaughter, Lisa Lynn Smith in 1987.
