Third Quarter Key To Cardinals’ Victory

RANDOLPH - The Randolph Cardinals (3-2, 2-1) handed the Cassadaga Valley Cougars (4-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season by a 53-41 margin on Thursday night in Division 2 boys basketball.

Randolph led by only four, 26-22, at halftime. But the Cardinals outscored the Cougars, 14-9, in third quarter to take a 10-point lead and were in front by double figures the rest of the way.

''We definitely came out in the third and put a little pressure on them,'' Randolph coach Kevin Hind said.

Mitch Maycock had all seven of his points in the third quarter for the Cards and Cody Oldro, who led Randolph with 15 points, had five.

Oldro also finished with eight rebounds.

Nate Beaver had 12 points and nine rebounds for Randolph while Byrce Morrison had 12 points, four steals and three assists.

Tim Bender led Cassadaga Valley with 10 points.

WESTFIELD COASTS

MAYVILLE - Tanner Dahl had 15 points, Jacob Grey 14 points and Jon Coe 12 points as Westfield (1-0, 2-3) turned back Chautauqua Lake (0-2, 1-4), 53-37.

Coe also delivered 13 rebounds and Grey seven for the winners, who jumped out in front at halftime, 23-9, and coasted to victory.

Dahl had six steals and Dylan MacCubbin had four for Westfield. MacCubbin accounted for two assists.

Ian Clute had a double-double for Chautauqua Lake with 17 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.

WARRIORS DOWN BEARS

FREWSBURG - Tadd Beattie's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave Salamanca a 30-24 lead and it was never headed in gaining a 67-44 win over Frewsburg.

Salamanca went on a 37-20 run over the last two quarters to nail down its first league win and even its overall record at 3-3. Meanwhile, Frewsburg drops to 0-2 in the league and 2-4 altogether.

Damon Taylor scored 14 points in the third quarter as the Warriors had a 18-12 advantage. Taylor wound up with 26 points while Tanner John had 15 points and 10 assists.

Alex Elderkin had 18 points with all 12 of his team's points in the third quarter. He also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Josh Nelson contributed 11 points in the defeat.
