SYRACUSE - Fresh off impressive wins over St. Joe's and Orchard Park, the Jamestown Red Raiders made the biggest jump among area teams in the New York State Sportswriters Association boys basketball rankings through Sunday.
The Red Raiders (3-0) improved to No. 10 in the Class AA poll, six spots better than last week. Senior Tommy Campion is leading the way, averaging 26 points per game after posting 31- and 28-point efforts last week. Jamestown has its home opener tonight against Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 rival Clarence. Varsity tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
Other ranked teams in the area are Silver Creek (No. 4) and Maple Grove (No. 6) in Class C, and Clymer (No. 4) in Class D. Maple Grove (2-1) improved one spot from last week's poll, while Silver Creek (4-0) and Clymer (3-0) remained the same.
Sherman (1-1) is an honorable-mention selection in Class D.
Several other Section 6 teams are also ranked. They are: Niagara Falls, No. 6 and Williamsville North, tied for 25th in Class AA; McKinley, No. 20 in Class A; Olean, No. 3 and Lackawanna No. 16 in Class B; and Middle College is No. 1 in Class C.
