HARD-EARNED?MONEY
Some information in the article "Hard-Earned Money," which appeared in Monday's Post-Journal, was unclear. The state contacted the Chautauqua County clerk's office via email and telephone, stating local DMVs were no longer allowed to have informational material regarding snowmobile clubs or handle Snowmobile Association registration. When a snowmobile is registered at a Chautauqua County DMV office, the county receives 12.7 percent of the transaction, if the registration is handled in the DMV office; That is, $5.72 if they pay the $45 fee and $12.70 if the snowmobile does not join a club and pay the $100 fee. The state then retains $4.28 for a $45 registration and takes a loss on the $100 registration. The snowmobile clubs will only be in the Mayville DMV on Saturdays. The county clerk worked with the Snowmobile Associations, the state DMV and the county's Information Technology Dept. to find a way to allow Snowmobile Association Registration in the Mayville office on Saturdays.
