MANCHESTER, Conn. - Jamestown Community College came roaring out of the box and put Manchester CC away early in NJCAA women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Jayhawks built up an 18-3 margin after five minutes and went on to record a 57-35 verdict to raise their record to 9-3.
During the run, Ashley DePane hit a pair of 3-pointers, Taylor Storer had two buckets and Kelsie Beaver one for JCC, an NJCAA Division II team. The Jayhawks guards hit on five of their first six shots
''Everybody contributed and we got a lift from our bench from Alex Smith and Ashlynn Nickerson.'' said George Sisson.
Smith had 10 points for the second straight game and Nickerson delivered double figures with a 10-point effort, with eight coming in the second half.
Beaver also had 10 points, DePane nine and Storer seven as the Jayhawks showed good balance.
Smith got a lot of playing time because Lauren Saglimben is sidelined with an ankle injury and is doubtful for the noon game today at Orange CC.
''She will probably sit today,'' said Sisson.
The main threat for Manchester (2-5), an NJCAA Division III team, was Arianna Rivera with 23 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
''She is very talented,'' said Sisson about the 5-foot-4 guard.
After the Orange CC game, JCC goes to Ohio to conclude the first semester. The Jayhawks meet Lakeland CC on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Lorain County CC on Friday at 4 p.m.
