WELLAND, Ont. - Jamestown Community College battled back from a double-figure halftime deficit to record its eighth women's basketball victory in 11 starts against Niagara College on Tuesday night.
The Jayhawks were down, 24-14, at intermission and rallied in the second half to pull out a 59-57 victory and avenge a 61-60 defeat to Niagara College earlier this season.
''It was a great win in another country and we showed good balance,'' said JCC coach George Sisson. ''Anytime you get a road win it is big, but especially the way we lost by a foul shot with no time remaining.''
Five players reached double figures with Taylor Storer scoring 13 points, Kelsie Beaver 11, and Alex Smith, Lauren Saglimben and Ashley DePane 10 apiece.
''Our man-to-man defense put a lot of pressure on them,'' said Sisson.
Storer was impressive with seven steals.
Beaver was 7-of-8 from the foul line during the second-half comeback that saw the Jayhawks outscore the hosts, 44-30. Smith hit 4-of-6 shots, including two 3-pointers off the bench and Saglimben also made two treys.
Niagara, which had four players 5 feet, 11 inches, dominated the boards, 60-39, with Kaitlin McPherson having 17 rebounds and 19 points.
The hosts had a chance to tie the game in the last few seconds, but they missed a shot and the putback didn't fall.
Foul shooting was also a key for the Jayhawks as they made 11-of-17 while Niagara was only 7-of-22.
JCC plays at Manchester (Conn.) CC on Saturday and treks to Orange (N.Y.) CC on Sunday with both games starting at noon.
