Verda I. Johnson

Verda I. Fox Johnson, 91, of 18 Bemus St., Lakewood, N.Y., passed away Thursday (Nov. 8, 2012) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.

An area resident for most of her life, she was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Clarendon, Pa., a daughter of the late George and Blanche Howard Fox.

She was a graduate of Warren Area High School.

Before her retirement, Verda was a very successful real estate agent in Chautauqua County. She entered the real estate field in1978 and became a licensed broker in 1980. Over the years she was the recipient of many sales awards. She was selected realtor of the year for Chautauqua County in 1996 and served as a director for many years on the Chautauqua County Board of Realtors. In earlier years she was the manager of the former Bassett Jewelers and Darling Jewelers.

For the past several years she had attended the Bethel Baptist Church in Jamestown.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Schuver of James-town, N.Y.; a son, Gary F. (Sandra) Johnson of Lakewood, N.Y., four grandchildren: Kristin (Paul) Gadra of Lakewood, Steven Schuver of Wheaton, Ill, Jennifer (George) Inashvili of Orange County, Calif., and Charles (Marci) Johnson, of Howell, Mich.; three great-grandchildren: Jane Wiggers, and Lilly and Matthew Johnson; and three sisters: Florence Vendenburg of Warren, Pa., and Beulah (Honey) Boll and Susie Frost both of Clarendon, Pa.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers: William, Floyd, Emory and George Fox; and a sister, Gertrude Fox Smetanka.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. James Read, pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday in the funeral home.
