SARANAC LAKE - Behind sophomore Ashley DePane's career high, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team improved its record to 3-2 Saturday in the North Country CC Tournament.
DePane poured in 29 points and the Jayhawks were able to post a 67-53 victory over Word of Life in the second round.
''She was big in spurts,'' said JCC coach George Sisson about the performance of DePane.
JCC grabbed a 33-22 lead at halftime and had the lead shaved to five points with four minutes left. But the Jayhawks responded with a surge that salted it away.
''We had a lot of trouble handling Holly Hemphill,'' said Sisson. Hemphill scored 29 points to tie DePane for scoring honors.
Kelsie Beaver chipped in with 16 points and Taylor Storer added 13 for the Jayhawks.
''We have to learn to play back-to-back days,'' said Sisson. ''We were a little flat because we had the late game on Friday and had to come back for a noon game Saturday.
JCC will have a long rest until the next outing at1 p.m. Saturday against visiting Lorain (Ohio) CC in a NJCAA game.
