Jackson Center Hosts Seminar

The Robert H. Jackson Center hosted a free continuing legal education seminar titled "Lincoln on Professionalism" recently.

The event opened with remarks by Greg Peterson, Jackson Center board member, and Randy Sweeney, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation executive director. The seminar began with a presentation on "Charitable Gift Giving" by guest speakers Betsy Constantine of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and Michael B. Engdahl, certified financial planner and attorney, followed by "Fillmore and Cleveland: Presidential Ethics" by Maryann Saccomando Freedman, attorney and first female president of the Erie County and New York State Bar associations.

The seminar ended with the feature program, "Lincoln on Professionalism," based on Abraham Lincoln's life as an attorney. Panelists for the discussion were the Hon. Jeremiah J. McCarthy, .S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of New York, the Hon. Eugene F. Pigott Jr., Judge for the state Court of Appeals, John K. Plumb, retired Jamestown area attorney and former Jamestown Bar Association president, and the Hon. Michael B. Powers, a past Phillips Lytle LLP attorney and Clarence town justice. Greg Peterson was the moderator.

A luncheon featuring Jehuu Caulcrick, NFL free agent, immediately followed the program. James C. Johnson of the Robert H. Jackson Center and June Diethrick of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation presented a $500 check to Caulcrick in honor of his appearance, which was donated to the Refugee Development Center of Lansing, Mich., where Caulcrick has been a long-time volunteer.

Developed primarily as a continuing legal education seminar for attorneys, the seminar appealed to a cross-disciplinary audience of attorneys, municipal officials, business leaders, bankers, accountants, financial planners, insurance and investment agencies, not-for-profit organizations and their board members. The Robert H. Jackson Center hosts free, continuing education seminars twice a year for area professionals which are also open to the public. The next seminar will be held in the spring.
