BUFFALO -A pair of Southwestern's relay teams finished in the top eight of the preliminaries of the Section 6 Girls Swimming Championships at the Flickinger Pool on Thursday.
The 400 relay unit comprised of freshmen Xiane Smith, Sydney Thomas and Kelsey Powers along with eighth-grader Sydney Burk came in seventh with a 3:49.30 for Southwestern.
Burk, senior Shelby Lunz, freshman Katie Lawson and Smith made up the Southwestern team that placed eighth in the 200 medley relay unit with a 3:49.30.
Smith just missed the championship bracket as she finished ninth in the 50 freestyle (25.85).
Also just missing the championship round was Emily Kling of Jamestown with a ninth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.13).
Thomas was 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:30.47) and 11th in the 200 freestyle (2:01.81) for Southwestern.
Morgan Scarpino of Frewsburg was 11th (26.41) and Jessica Fish of Salamanca 16th (26.45) in the 50 freestyle.
Burk was 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:04.51) and 12th in the 100 freestyle (57.23) while Southwestern classmate Smith came in 15th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.08).
Freshman Katie Lawton came in 15th in the 100 butterfly (1:05.09) for Southwestern.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Southwestern placed 10th with a 1:47.17 and making up that unit was Katie Lawton, eighth-grader Jilli Lawton, Powers and Thomas.
Freshman Makayla Sargent of Olean won the 200 individual medley (2:05.84) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.65) and qualified for the states in those events.
Those finishing in ninth through 16th are in consolation round and 17th through 24th are in the bonus heat.
Action resumes at 11 a.m. today with the diving competition followed by swimming at 4 p.m.
