To the Readers' Forum:
While many sports fans are disappointed about the NHL lockout, there is another hockey league that you could be watching and it's in our own backyard.
Jamestown is home to the NAHL Jamestown Ironmen. The NAHL is one of the top junior hockey leagues in the country and is the same league where Buffalo Sabres Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek, Nathan Gerbe and Jordan Leopold got their start. What's even more impressive is that the Jamestown Ironmen are currently in first place in their division.
As a host parent of two of the Jamestown Ironmen players, our family attends every home game. There is always great food and drink specials, fun contests and intermission activities, and exciting hockey. It is a very family friendly environment. I have to admit, though, that it is a bit disheartening to see so many empty seats.
This team of 23 young men, who come from all over the U.S. and even as far away as Sweden and Germany, have certainly provided some exciting hockey this season with overtime wins and shootouts. These players are living with nine local families and have truly become a part of our families and this community. Unlike the hockey teams Jamestown has had in the past, this is a more exciting brand of hockey due to the higher caliber of talent.
So I urge everyone in the community to come and check it out to see for yourself.
The next home games will be played on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. against the Michigan Warriors.
Start filling those seats Jamestown!
