The 2012 New York winter wheat crop was estimated at 5.36 million bushels, 3 percent more than last year's production.
Area harvested was 85,000 acres, a decrease of 9 percent from a year ago.
Yields are estimated at 63 bushels per acre, 7 bushels more than last year. New York oats totaled 3.25 million bushels, an increase of 91 percent from last year. Area for harvest increased 47 percent to 50,000 acres. Yields are estimated at 65 bushels per acre, a 15 bushel increase from last year.
Barley production in New York is estimated at 376,000 bushels, a 9 percent decrease from last year. Area for harvest totaled 8,000 acres, an 11 percent decrease from a year ago. Yields averaged 47 bushels per acre, a 1 bushel increase from 2011.
U.S. wheat production totaled 2.27 billion bushels in 2012, an increase of 13 percent from 2011. Grain area totaled 49.0 million acres, an increase of 7 percent from the previous year. The United States yield is 46.3 bushels per acre, a 2.6 bushel increase from the previous year and matches the record high from 2010. The levels of production and changes from 2011 by type are winter wheat, 1.65 billion bushels, an increase of 10 percent; other spring wheat, 542 million bushels, an increase of 19 percent; Durum wheat, 82.0 million bushels, an increase of 62 percent.
Oat production is estimated at 64.0 million bushels, a 19 percent increase from 2011. Yield is estimated at 61.3 bushels per acre, a 4.2 bushel increase from the previous year. Harvested area, at 1.05 million acres, is 11 percent more than last year. It is the second smallest acreage harvested for grain on record.
Barley production is estimated at 220 million bushels, an increase of 41 percent from 2011. Average yield per acre, at 67.9 bushels, decreased 1.7 bushels from the previous year. Producers seeded 3.64 million acres in 2012, a 42 percent increase from last year. Harvested area, at 3.24 million acres, increased 45 percent from 2011. These represent the first increases in seeded and harvested area since 2008.
Rye production for 2012 is estimated at 6.94 million bushels. Harvested area totaled 248,000 acres, an increase of 6,000 acres from 2011. The United States yield, at 28 bushels per acre, increased 1.9 bushels from the previous year. Favorable growing conditions in the Southern Great Plains and Northern Great Plains led to the yield increase from a year earlier.
