RIPLEY - A Ripley man is recovering in Hamot Hospital after being struck by a train Tuesday evening.

Chautauqua County Sheriff's officials say Timothy R. Luke Jr., 23, of Route 76, Ripley, was crossing the railroad tracks on foot at the South State Street crossing in Ripley and apparently didn't notice approaching CSX and Norfolk-Southern trains from the west. As Luke stepped off the tracks he was struck by the Norfolk-Southern train on the southern set of tracks in his left leg/foot area and sent into the air. He landed clear of the train next to the tracks.

Luke was treated at the scene by Ripley Fire and transported to Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa., where he was treated for a broken leg.

A witness at the scene indicated that the gates were operational at the time of the incident.
