Jon DeAngelo, service dog trainer for New Horizons Service Dogs Inc. of Orange City, Fla., was a guest speaker for the Greater Jamestown AM Rotary recently.
DeAngelo spoke about the various types of assistance animals, state and federal public access laws regarding assistance animals, and the proper etiquette for seeing these assistance animals in public. DeAngelo works with service dogs, a type of assistance animal, that are placed with individuals with disabilities such as autism, PTSD and disabilities that severely limit a person's mobility.
DeAngelo shared his personal experience about his two-year training journey with Lola, the first service dog he trained. He concluded his presentation by sharing several pictures of the young boy with autism with whom Lola was paired with in 2011. As a service dog, Lola attends school with his handler, accompanies the boy at his doctor's appointments and provides day-to-day emotional support for the young boy.
