The Post-Journal

Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation has grant money available to help very low-income seniors with small emergency repairs.

The money was awarded by New York State Homes and Community Renewal to help seniors throughout Chautauqua County.

Eligible seniors must live in Chautauqua County, be over the age of 60, own their home, live in it year-round and be current on their property taxes. The existing situation must pose a health or safety threat and must be able to be repaired for less than $7,500. In addition, the following income guidelines apply:

family of one - $19,950;

family of two - $22,800;

family of three - $25,650;

family of four - $28,450.

Adjustments continue to be made as family size increases.

Grant money can be used to complete small emergency repairs. Examples of small emergency repairs include repair or replacement of a dangerous or non-functional furnace, correcting sewage backups, bathroom safety modifications, step/stair repair, repair or replacement of appliances that are presenting a danger, and many other smaller repairs. Repairs costing more than $7,500 are not eligible.

For more information, call CHRIC at 753-4650, 661-7650 or 363-4650.
