L. James "Jim" Herritt, 94, of 143 McDaniel Ave. Jamestown, and Cape Coral, Fla., passed away at 1:57 a.m. Monday, (Oct. 1, 2012), in W.C.A. Hospital.
An area resident for most of his life, he was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Jersey Shore, Pa., the son of the late Leo-nard J. and Ida Winner Herritt.
Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from Feb. 22, 1945, to Oct. 22, 1946, during World War II with the 142nd ordnance base automotive maintenance battalion. During his tour of duty, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Ribbon and the Army Occupation Medal.

Before his retirement in 1979, he was the manager of the Jamestown branch for the Electrolux Corpora-tion, where he worked from 1947 to 1979. He gave his life to selling and repairing Electrolux vacuum cleaners and continued working during his retirement years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Myers, Fla., and while living in Jamestown, was a member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge 145 F&AM, the Jamestown Consistory, the Jamestown Shrine Club, the Houda Club and was treasurer for the Ismalia Drum and Bugle Corp. and the Den Adelman's Club for 25 years. He was also a member of the Jamestown Moose Lodge.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved vacationing and spending winters in Florida for 28 years.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years the former LaVerne Elston, whom he married March 30, 1947; three daughters: Anna Marie Bower of Williamsport, Pa., Ida Swift and Cathy (Malcolm) Bernard, both of Jamestown; eight grandchildren: Jennifer Bernard, Jonathan Bernard, Justin Bernard, Jackie Wright, Penney Bower, Carolyn Stubler, John Bower Jr. Matthew Bower; 10 great-grandchildren including Mikaela Groves of Jamestown; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Douty.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Phelps, chaplain of Hospice Chautauqua County, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday where a Masonic Lodge funeral service will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
