The Downtown Jamestown Development Corp. is hosting its Farmers Market Kids! Eat Local Challenge through Oct. 5.
The challenge is a contest that encourages youth to eat local. There are nine different tasks available and each entry must complete a minimum of four tasks to enter the drawing.
The challenge will run through the Univera Healthcare Downtown Jamestown Farmers Market season with a winner drawn Oct. 5. Three prizes will be awarded: first place will receive a one-year membership to the Jamestown YMCA, kids cookbook and gardening kit; second place will receive a kids gardening kit and soccer ball; and third place will receive a kids cookbook and kick ball. Entry forms available online at discoverjamestown or at the weekly farmers market.
The Kids! Eat Local Challenge is sponsored by the DJDC and Jamestown YMCA.
The market continues to operate every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Foundry Alley next to the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center through Oct. 26. The market continues to bring local farms selling farm-fresh produce, fresh-frozen meats, cheese, eggs, goat milk fudge, homemade baked goods, and other specialty products. This week at the market, patrons will find sweet corn, pumpkins, peppers, apple cider, kale, squash, tomatoes, raspberries, carrots, beets, cauliflower, beets, lettuce, potatoes, eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, apples, grapes, pears, watermelon, and more.
Free entertainment will be provided Friday by the Chadakoin Crickets from noon to 1 p.m.
Vendors accept WIC and senior farmers market coupons, cash, and check. EBT, credit, and debit cards are also accepted at the market information booth. For every $5 spent using EBT, recipients will receive a free $2 Fresh Connect coupon to purchase additional eligible products.
Food vendors include Elegant Edibles, which will be its last week participating this season, and Big Pitt's BBQ.
Free parking is available along West Third Street and in the parking lot on the corner of West Second and Washington streets.
