CHARLOTTE - A Westfield man was taken to WCA Hospital on Friday afternoon after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel and driving into a utility pole.
Robert R. Wilson, 20, was operating a delivery truck owned by Johnson Estate Winery of Westfield southbound on Route 60 in the town of Charlotte when he drove off the west side of the road and into a utility pole, causing it to sheer off approximately 6 to 8 feet off the ground. The vehicle continued through the lawn and went down a deep embankment surrounded by trees.
After interviewing witnesses and conducting an investigation, Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies believe Wilson fell asleep at the wheel and charges are pending.
He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening conditions by Cassadaga Fire Department personnel and the road was closed for about an hour while powerlines were removed from the road.
Sinclairville Rescue, National Grid and New York State Police also assisted at the scene.
