PORTLAND - The Chautauqua County Health Department announced today that the boil water order in effect since Aug. 10 for all customers served by Portland Water District No. 2 in the Van Buren Point and Greencrest areas is now lifted. Water samples collected on Aug. 14-15 show that the water is now safe to drink. The town has installed a temporary chlorine booster station and has been flushing the system to evacuate any contaminated water from the water lines and to increase the chlorine level in the water.
The town of Portland will be working with the town of Pomfret and others to develop a plan that makes sure the chlorine level in the water lines is maintained at a higher level, which will reduce the chances of this happening again.
Any questions should be directed to the town of Portland at 792-9614 or the county Health Department at 753-4481.
