Developers A Welcome Sight

The Post-Journal

Surely there are neighborhoods in Jamestown where folks are wishing they could share in the good luck that has come to property owners on Dewey Place.

There, a run-down house that has been a rental unit for at least a decade is being rescued by two local men who intend to return it to its status as an owner-occupied home.

Realtors Gary Proctor and Andrew Jarrett are renovating the property inside and out. Their ultimate goal is to sell it to someone who intends to live in it - thus restoring Dewey Place to a neighborhood of owner-occupied homes.

As you read yesterday, this is exactly the type of rehabilitation called for in the seminal plan by consultant Charles Buki to save the city's neighborhoods. And in that regard, it is important to note what this project is not:

This is not a publicly funded revitalization project. Proctor and Jarrett are fixing up the property at their own expense as an investment.

This is not a fly-by-night "flip this house" scheme. Proctor and Jarrett believe in revitalization projects that are a centerpiece of saving the city's neighborhoods from decay. That's why they teamed up to renovate this house.

This is not a project to create more subsidized rental units in the city. In fact, it is exactly the opposite of the type of housing most frequently developed in Jamestown by various government agencies.

Peter Lombardi, director of neighborhood initiatives for Jamestown Renaissance Corp., applauds the idea of taking care of the most troubled house on every block in the city in order to preserve neighborhoods and property values.

''It's nothing flashy,'' he said. ''It's simply restoring an older property so that it can once again add value to its neighborhood.''

And so, in turn, we join all of the neighbors on Dewey Place in applauding Gary Proctor and Andrew Jarrett for believing it is worthwhile to do that.
