Have questions about lake and watershed management? Want to learn more about algae or aquatic plants? How about watershed landscaping?
Much work has been done over the last few years and recent months by area organizations to make information easily available to you through the worldwide web.
The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy has valuable watershed care information on its website at www.chautauquawatershed.org. Examples of information found on this site are pages entitled, "Tips for Healthy Yards & Clean Lakes" and "10 Simple Ways to Protect Your Watershed."
The Chautauqua Lake Association posts information on its programs at www.chautauqualake.org, and the Chautauqua Lake Management Commission - with a laudable effort from commission member Andrew Nixon (representing the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau) - has created a new website called the "Chautauqua County Lakes and Waterways Website" at chautauqualakes.webs.com.
The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development has posted The Chautauqua Lake Watershed Management Plan and other reports on its website at www.planningchautauqua.com, and you can even watch a 14-minute video about watershed management called, "Chautauqua Watershed, Planning for a Healthy Future" at www.planningchautauqua.com/watershed/chautlake_mgmt_plan.htm. This informative video was a joint effort with the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development, the New York State Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, and CLMC partner and cooperating organizations, including Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County and the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy.
Want to learn even more? Visit the New York State Federation of Lake Association website at www.nysfola.org to learn about lakes in New York, and learn more about lakes across our continent at the North American Lake Management Society at www.nalms.org. Have questions about blue-green or potentially harmful algae blooms? Then visit www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/77118.html and dnr.wi.gov/lakes/bluegreenalgae.
Not connected to the web? Have more specific questions on lake or watershed management activities?
For questions regarding landscaping and watershed management, including lake and stream management, please call the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy at 664-2166. For in-lake plant management and shoreline maintenance questions, please call the Chautauqua Lake Association at 763-8602.
Please remember that the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy's watershed pollution control, watershed enhancement and land conservation activities and Chautauqua Lake Association's plant management, shore cleanup, lake maintenance activities and lake studies are completely limited in their scope and effectiveness by the amount of funding you provide. These are nonprofit organizations operating to benefit the public. Please call or go to their websites to learn how to support these complementary organizations.
The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is a local nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the water quality, scenic beauty, and ecological health of the lakes, streams, wetlands, and watersheds of the Chautauqua region.
