Time Is Now To Fix Intersection

July 25, 2012
The Post-Journal

Once you pass the traffic light at the Tops plaza coming into Jamestown on Washington Street, it is a straightaway shot up the four-lane road for eight blocks to the next light.

Along the way, you pass through residential neighborhoods as well as a robust commercial district. And at 13th Street, you pass by the entrance to the city's Chadakoin Park - a popular destination for the adults and children who live in the area.

Surely no one is surprised Chadakoin Park's 13th Street intersection is proving to be dangerous for pedestrians- and it was deadly in a tragic accident in June.

With a pedestrian-car accident at that very spot just this Monday - and who knows how many unrecorded near misses - we side with resident Tom McCrady in saying there is no time to lose in putting up a pedestrian-activated traffic light there.

McCrady had personally witnessed enough of those near misses to have already asked the state Department of Transportation to at least take a look at putting in the type of painted crosswalk that requires traffic to stop when a pedestrian steps on the street.

But given the four lanes and the volume of traffic on Washington Street, that just does not seem good enough.

Yes, yes. We can hear some folks faulting the pedestrians for trying to cross the busy street at the park entrance. But what do we expect kids to do? Walk over to 10th Street or down to the Tops Plaza past 18th Street in order to cross at a light?

That is just not realistic, nor is it fair to the children there.

We know the state has to study the situation before deciding what to do - and we urge the DOT to get the promised traffic engineering investigation under way right now.

Tom McCrady, a concerned citizen who doesn't just stand by when he sees a wrong that should be righted, is spot on in observing that the potential for disaster at the intersection is extremely high.

Let's get it fixed now.
