STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - A Penn State spokesman says a decision on the fate of a statue of late football coach Joe Paterno will be made within days.

Critics have called for the statue to be taken down in light of a report concluding Paterno and other top university officials concealed information about sex abuse allegations against a former assistant coach to avoid bad publicity.

Penn State spokesman David La Torre said Tuesday a decision on the matter is seven to 10 days away.

The statue of former Penn State University head football coach Joe Paterno stands outside Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa. After an eight-month inquiry, former FBI director Louis Freeh's firm produced a 267-page report that concluded that Paterno and other top Penn State officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky for more than a decade for fear of bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other youngsters. The revelations contained in the report have stirred a debate over whether the statue should remain.

A small plane has pulled a banner mentioning the statue over State College, where Penn State is based. The banner read, "Take the statue down or we will."

Paterno's family denies he tried to cover anything up.
