Cheryl Evan, director of community affairs for the Tanglewood Group, has recently graduated from both the Basic and Advanced essentiALZ Certification Programs offered by the Alzheimer's Association.
The courses covered topics such as understanding behavior, communication, rethinking wandering and person-centered care. As director of Comfort Today Adult Day Care, she feels the training will help her provide the very best specialized care for clients living with Alzheimer's Disease, and will also be beneficial as she develops educational classes for the Tanglewood Group's staff and community groups.
Mrs. Evan's philosophy regarding Dementia care is to focus on each person's strengths, identify their abilities, and then find ways to enable them to succeed. This approach hinges on knowing each client's life story and using it to form connections with them. As the disease progresses, she finds this technique to be critical in creating moments of joy.
