Southwestern, Falconer, Westfield Key Clubs Raise Money With All-Night ‘Rock-A-Thon’

May 13, 2012
Southwestern Central Schools

Southwestern, Falconer and Westfield Key Club recently joined forces and participated in a fundraiser called a Rock-a-Thon to help others. Each club member solicited pledges to stay up all night by rocking in rocking chairs (hence "Rock-a-Thon"). Southwestern and Falconer High School students participated together at Falconer High School on Jan. 27-28. The Westfield Club had their Rock-a-Thon on the same night, but at Westfield Central School.

The Southwestern club decided to donate their proceeds to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Falconer club donated their funds to Project Eliminate. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation offers support to families of children with cystic fibrosis and researches new treatment options. Project Eliminate helps to save or protect millions of mothers and their newborns against tetanus worldwide. The total amount donated from the two local clubs was more than $1,490. The Key Club members had fun meeting students from other clubs. They got to know each other, ate, played board games, watched movies, played video games and had fun just hanging out.

Key Club is an extracurricular club open to students who enjoy volunteering their time to help others. It is one of the largest clubs at both Southwestern and Falconer High School. Other activities of the clubs include participation in Walk 4 Paws for the Humane Society, Unicef Collection for Project Eliminate, Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army, wrapping gifts for Infinity, volunteering as elves at Chautauqua Mall, helping American Association of University Women at the What's New Fair, walking for Juvenile Diabetes, and assisting Lakewood Kiwanis at the Busti Apple Festival. Key Club helps students to learn to become leaders in their school and community and promotes volunteering to those in need in the community. The Key Clubs are appreciative of those who donated monetarily to support the causes, to parents and guardians for their support of the Key Club activities, and for all the food donations the evening of the Rock-a-Thon, including the Falconer Kiwanis Club.
