The Southwestern Central School Transition service is a program that is mandated by federal and state laws under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as the IDEA. The student's transition from a supportive school environment to a world of adult services can be stressful and confusing if plans are not made in preparation for this milestone. Our program is designed to give students an opportunity to explore the world of work through volunteer and other work experiences within the local community. Students gain knowledge and skills expected in the workplace. This is a very effective venue for promoting attitudes and behaviors which enable the students to become productive members of society upon graduation.
The Transition Program has been in full swing this year, with many successful placements in the community such as WCA, SPCA, Salvation Army, The Post-Journal, LUV Toyota, and St. Susan's Soup Kitchen. This year we have embarked on a new adventure by teaming up with the Home Depot on Fairmount Avenue.
Chris Kunkle, manager of Home Depot, and Marygrace Guarino, transition coordinator, have collaborated on a Teen Apprentice Program. The program is a pilot program and our Home Depot and the Home Depot in Buffalo are the only two stores in the entire country, implementing this at this time. The focus of these workshops are multifaceted, not only developing actual useful technical skills, but also teaching math related, problem solving and thinking skills. The Home Depot Company is also hoping that future employment opportunities may develop, for our students, through this new relationship. The program will have a curriculum which includes skills such as: measuring, project calculation, project planning, painting and tiling techniques, as well as various other technical skills.
