Tax On Wealthy Data Is Misleading

May 9, 2012
The Post-Journal

To the Readers' Forum:

This is in response to a recent column in The Post-Journal. The opinion was written by Mona Charen. She is talking about why the wealthy pay fewer taxes than the middle class. She quoted the president as saying ''Now that's wrong.'' ''That's not fair.'' the she says ''it also isn't true.'' Well, I will use her own stats she got from the National Taxpayer Union in 2009 to prove she is wrong.

The top one percent of earners paid 36.7 percent that year. I would argue that 36.7 percent is too low, considering the top one percent passes 99 percent of the national wealth. If taxes were fair, we would have a flat tax income. Then the one percent would be paying 99 percent of income taxes, since they would have to make 99 percent of income to keep control of 99 percent of all wealth in this country.
