Second Terms Not Good For Presidents

March 20, 2012
The Post-Journal

To the Readers' Forum:

Second terms for United States presidents have not been good. Due to egotism, first term presidents want to keep respect of the people. Their thinking is, if I can get reelected it will show I did a good job and I can complete the programs I have started and continue the ideas I have originated.

A look at recent history shows that few presidents have had good second terms, even if they were reelected. A few, such as Lyndon Johnson, don't try. Some seem to find their destiny in doing something else, such as Jimmy Carter, and others have had a bad time, such as Richard Nixon.

Advice to President Obama, ''Try something else. Think of your family and your own mental and physical health. You are good at speaking and you might be happier addressing crowds rather than trying to move the whole country.''
