The James Prendergast Library will offer several new classes beginning Monday with support from the New York state Library's Adult Literacy Library Services grant program.
Courses designed to help area residents enhance their job and computer skills are offered in cooperation with Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES. Instruction is free and open to the public.
Sections of "Let's Start with Computers" will begin on Monday March 19 and continue May 7 and June 11. Students meet for six two-hour sessions from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

"This class is perfect if you are wondering about the most basic computer questions,'' said Kathy Colver, course instructor.
It covers computer terms, shut down procedures, use of a mouse, creating and editing a Word document, saving to different computer drives, and basic Internet and email skills. Students also learn to cut, copy and paste, and they create their own certificate of completion.
"Let's Start with Excel" will meet from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays April 4, 5, 11, and 12. Another class will run from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on five consecutive Fridays starting May 4.
The course introduces cells, rows and columns, highlighting, simple formulas, features such as AutoSum and how to construct a budget worksheet.
"Let's Start with Word" will meet for six two-hour sessions starting either April 4 or June 19 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on various days of the week.
Students learn about toolbars, editing options, how to insert and format a picture, and how to use templates. They will create and print several of their own documents.
There are also four brief classes that meet once for two hours.
Email basics - 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., April 13
Internet basics 3 to 5 p.m. April 13; 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., May 10
Mousing 101 - 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 1
Computers for Beginners - 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., May 25; 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., May 31.
