Montessori Students Learn About Planets

January 8, 2012
The Post-Journal

Montessori K-3 has been working on the solar system. Students learned that there are nine planets in our solar system; however, one of the planets is a dwarf planet. They made an elaborate chart that included the distance a planet is from the sun, how large each planet is, and how many moons and rings a planet has. They learned a mnemonic to help them remember the planets and their order from the sun: ''My Very Eager Monkey Just Sits Up Nicely.'' The children like to add the word ''Period'' at the end because they want to include Pluto. Lastly, they made our own solar system. Everyone was able to pick a planet, the sun or the moon. They used paper mache and paint to make the most realistic model of our solar system that they could.
