In 2011, LINKS Charity is celebrating its 20th anniversary by starting a new charitable event in Jamestown.
On Sunday, WCA Hospital's Jones Memorial Health Center, 51 Glasgow Ave., will play host to the inaugural LINKS Pink Walk: A Celebration of Courage. The event will celebrate those who have battled breast cancer and will enhance local cancer care.
The LINKS Pink Walk festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with registration and many family activities, including the Balloon Man, face painting, games, pink nails and pink extension courtesy of Salon One, pink refreshments and a basket giveaway.
Members of the LINKS Pink Walk Planning Committee, from left, Brad Van Riper, Judith Thomas, Toni DeAngelo, Kim Cardinale, Pat Carr, Dianne Courtney-Freeman, Christina Reynolds, Linda Feeny, David Thomas and Karl Sisson, display the event poster and a small portion of the pink LINKS tribute chain that will be carried by walkers during the inaugural LINKS Pink Walk on Sunday in tribute to breast cancer patients past and present.
At 11:45 a.m., WCA will dedicate its new Breast Cancer Tribute Garden just outside the entrance to the WCA Cancer Treatment Center. The center will also be open for tours as WCA employees promote breast cancer awareness and education. More than 700 bulbs featuring five varieties of pink daffodil bulbs will be planted in the garden in tribute to breast cancer patients past and present.
At noon, the 1.4 mile walk will begin and end outside the WCA Cancer Treatment Center, crossing the Washington Street bridge into downtown Jamestown. The walk will be led by breast cancer survivors and all walkers will carry the LINKS Tribute Chain, a chain featuring thousands of pink links that have been purchased in honor or in memory of loved ones who are or have battled breast cancer. Donations for these links as well as tribute daffodil bulbs for the Breast Cancer Tribute Garden will be available at WCA Hospital (Center for Imaging, Cancer Treatment Center, and Office of Development), WCA Services, Truck-Lite, Cummins, Jamestown Savings Bank branches, Veracity Benefits and Jamestown Radiologists.
Following the walk, all walkers and event volunteers will be treated a hot dog picnic meal. At that time, pink-themed activities will continue along with live music.
Walkers are encouraged to register and join a team online at www.FirstGiving.com/wca/links-pink-walk. Each walker who raises at least $50 in gifts from sponsors will receive a complimentary long-sleeve pink event T-shirt to wear during the walk. Additional T-shirts will be available for $10 each.
In addition to the major and associate sponsors of LINKS Charity -Truck Lite, Cummins, ALSTAR, United Refining, Jamestown Savings Bank, Veracity Benefits and The Bilicki Law Firm - the presenting sponsor of the 2011 LINKS Pink Walk is Jamestown Radiologists.
"On behalf of Jamestown Radiologists and WCA Hospital, I want to invite you to join us in promoting good breast health and supporting our fight against breast cancer by walking in this important event," said Dr. Lyndon Gritters, chair of the WCA Hospital Department of Radiology and partner with Jamestown Radiologists. "Detecting early breast cancer saves lives and digital mammography will improve our ability to find these early, potentially curable cancers."
In October, WCA Hospital is upgrading from film to digital mammography because it offers a number of advantages and patient conveniences. Digital mammography provides high-resolution digital breast images immediately and allows the technologist to take more detailed images without delay. These digital images are easier to access, store, transmit, and retrieve, and can be acquired at a lower radiation dose without compromising quality. The professionals in the WCA Center for Imaging & Medical Arts recognize that early detection means faster intervention, more treatment options, and improved survival rates.
