DJDC Looking Forward To International Hockey

September 6, 2010
By Lee Harkness, DJDC executive director

Today is Labor Day in Jamestown and the rest of our country, and it pretty much denotes the end of our summer.

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882. All 50 states now celebrate Labor Day. The holiday was instituted by President Grover Cleveland who was trying to put labor as a top priority after the 1894 Pullman Strike.

According to Wikipedia, the form of celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal for the holiday: a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organization," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks, water sports and public art events. Families take it as a last chance to travel and be together before the end of summer and start of the school year. We at DJDC want to honor all of our working family members and families. We wish you the very best and most relaxing weekend! There are many celebrations in our area and hope you have a chance to enjoy some of them.

We would like to invite any of you who can attend, to our business/economic development/Celebrate Jamestown meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at our offices located in the Renaissance Building, the former Grants Building on the corner of Third and Washington streets. The entrance is on the Second Street side. The meeting begins at 8 a.m., and we will have coffee and refreshments. We will discuss business concerns and upcoming events. We do planning and gather input from everyone with regard to our future activities. We try to get information on all events and activities.

One of our biggest topics of conversation will be the World Junior Championship as part of the International Ice Hockey Federation Pre Camp Festivities. The main tournament will be from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The Pre Camp for this tournament will be held in Jamestown from Dec.21 to Dec.23 with games between Norway/Slovakia, Russia/Slovakia and USA/Norway.

Ladies and gentlemen, these international games will be right here in Jamestown! DJDC (and other organizations) will be working with the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena to make this a truly spectacular event for Jamestown. We will have a theme our holiday activities and the month of December and it is "The World Comes to Jamestown." We will be asking stores, businesses, manufacturers, organizations and community members to all take part in this and really support it. This is our chance to make Jamestown a world-class community.

This event is expected to have an economic impact in the Western New York area of more than $100 million. Buffalo Business First states that it is "The largest convention, special event or amateur sporting event ever held in the region!" Over 60 percent of the visitors are expected to arrive from outside the United States and these three top tournament teams will be coming to Jamestown. We need to start the planning process to make everyone feel welcome and when they leave Jamestown want to return at a later time.

We will be discussing this and much, much more. I just want to add that each Monday we produce "Monday Mail" which we send out electronically. The purpose is to keep those receiving it up to date on current activities and all that is going on. It was designed to replace a myriad of e-mails and other mail that sometimes can overload your computer and office. It has worked very well, and anyone in Jamestown can add information to it. We send it out every Monday. If you wish to receive "Monday Mail" just call our office at 664-2477 and ask to be added to our mailing list - I think you will find it interesting and informative. Have a great Labor Day!
