CASSADAGA - Mutiny on Cassadaga's beach occurred recently as the youngsters participating in the eight-week beach program's end of season carnival had it out with beach staff.
The theme of this year's carnival featured pirates and the staff came dressed for the occasion wearing appropriate gear.
The mutiny took place when the pirates came across the water in canoes to toss water filled balloons at the shoreline where the program's participants stood.
The bunch gathered at the shoreline didn't endure the assault willingly. They caught the lobbed balloons and threw them back at the attackers.
It was a fun event, as was the treasure hunt that also took place, as the youngsters followed maps drawn up by the pirates to find plastic gold coins that were buried in the sand.
The coins were redeemed for prizes that turned out to be basketballs that didn't bounce well on the sand.
It didn't matter to the kids, they were having fun with the carnival's traditional games, that also included a slip and slide into the lake and the gorilla bounce house.
The estimated 75 people who turned out for the carnival picnic meal also enjoyed hot dogs, pizza and a table full of food brought to pass.
The 28 youngsters who successfully completed the Red Cross approved swim lessons were recognized with certificates.
"We had a really great year and accomplished what we set out to do," program director Valerie Culverwell said of the eight-week session.
But, this isn't the end of summer yet so the kids don't have to hang up their swim suits or put their beach towels away.
The Cassadaga beach will remain open through today with lifeguards on duty from noon to 6 p.m.
After that, the gates will be locked until next year when a new beach program will be offered.
