Chiefs Seeded Fourth For Playoffs

August 24, 2010
The Post-Journal

The Jamestown Chiefs of the Northeastern Football Alliance have been playing pretty well at home lately.

Two straight victories at Strider Field for the Chiefs improved their record to 5-4 on the season with one game remaining in the regular season. The winning record is nice, but the best is yet to come for the second-year franchise in Jamestown.

Win or lose the final game against the Southern Tier Diesel, the Chiefs are headed to the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. It will be the first-ever playoff game for the Chiefs and to take it one step further, the first-ever home playoff game for the franchise as well.

They will host the No. 5 seed, which right now would be the Oneida County Titans, at Strider Field on Sept. 25 as the NFA postseason kicks off.

''It's exciting that this is our first playoff game,'' coach and president Joe Scapelitte said. ''It's fantastic and we're having a great time. We're having fun together and we're really gelling as a team. The excitement is undescribable.''

The Chiefs secured the playoff spot after posting back-to-back wins. Of those five wins, one was against Oneida County with a 24-15 advantage for Jamestown.

''Our offense is starting to click,'' Scapelitte said. ''The defense has always been the mainstay and the offense is finally starting to click. We moved from a pro set offense to the spread to try to exploit the talent of the wide receivers.''

Leading the wide receiving core is second-year man Brian Hardy.

The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds each receive first round byes in the playoffs. The No. 6 seed travels to the home field of the No. 3 seed while the Chiefs at No. 4 will host the Titans at No. 5.

The final regular season game for Jamestown will be Sept. 11 in Olean.
