Accused abductor and rapist Mike Beaulieu, who faces nine charges in Canada, is scheduled to enter pleas next month.
Trooper Jeff Walters of Warren-based state police said on Tuesday that Beaulieu, 35, of Anson, Maine, appeared in Edmiston Provincial Court on Aug. 11 to answer to four charges under the Canadian Customs Act for illegally crossing the border, four criminal charges related to the firearm he had in his possession at the time of apprehension and one charge for marijuana possession.
Beaulieu is being charged with numerous crimes locally, including rape, stemming from his alleged attack on two people in the Allegheny National Forest on Aug. 3.
Beaulieu was originally scheduled to appear in court again Tuesday, but the hearing did not happen.
"I think he is being evaluated medically and psychologically," Walters said.
According to Walters, Beaulieu is scheduled to appear in Canadian court again on Sept. 8 for "election of plea."
While Beaulieu remains north of the border, the U.S. Marshals are serving as liaisons between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Pennsylvania State Police and the other law enforcement agencies involved.
In the meantime, law enforcement officials are building their case against Beaulieu.
"We've collected evidence up in Maine and Canada both," Walters said.
Police are also re-tracing Beaulieu's movements from Kinzua Dam back to Maine.
"We are still working on the case and following where he had been when he left Warren County," Walters said, adding that officials are trying to determine if other jurisdictions have unsolved crimes which could be linked to Beaulieu.
At this point, there is no confirmation of other crimes being tied to Beaulieu.
