A slip-and-slide provided much entertainment for Bemus Point children Friday.

The Town of Ellery Youth Recreation Program celebrated its culminating day at the Bemus Point Village Park, with about 60 children sliding on the slip-and-slide.

The slide was provided by the Bemus Point Fire Department.

The day began with a scavenger hunt, with the children searching the park for many common items in order to win a prize. They then slid through the park on the slip-and-slide, which was manned by two firefighters from the department.

The summer program was celebrating its 24th anniversary Friday.

"The program began with Kristen Wright about 24 years ago," said Kari Auer, chair of the program. "She ran it for about 14 years. We are celebrating the end of this year's program today."

Among the other activities the children participated in were a scavenger hunt, a water balloon game and pudding painting.

"We get to paint with the pudding, and if we are lucky we get to eat what's left," said Grace Auer, one of the participating children.

Food for the day was donated by many local business, she said.

"McDonald's provided the drinks, the chips came from Lays, the buns from Stroeman's and the hot dogs from Chatterbox," she said. "Everybody has just been great."

The program is run through the Bemus Point Elementary School, with many of the activities hosted on the grounds.

"At the school they have arts and crafts and can do many other activities," she said.

This year saw 128 children enrolled, she said, with a daily attendance of about 80 children. The program, which ran from July 5 to July 30, included many field trips, such as Midway Park, mini golf and bowling.

Continuing next year, the program is open to Bemus Point children, and visiting children to the area, with notices sent home from the school, said Auer. Signups for the program are hosted on the first full week of July, and the cost is $30.
