SHERMAN- Names memorialized on a wall are usually meant to signify great things, in the vein of the Vietnam Memorial or an Employee of the Year.
Sherman Central School is no different.
The Board of Education for the 2008-2009 school year established guidelines for a "Wall of Fame" to be displayed in the building's main lobby. The wall is now coming together.
"It was kind of the brainchild of one of our board members a few years ago, Bill Wiggers," said principal Kaine Kelly. "And from there what we did was we did a little exploration to what other schools around the area did, and basically what was decided was that we wanted to honor people who have either positively impacted the educational institution at Sherman Central School or people who have taken their Sherman education and have got out into the world and done great things."
Athletes can also be honored for their athletic achievements while attending the school, however it is not just an athletic honor, he said.
"In addition to the Wall of Fame, we are also going to be having a plaque honoring all servicemen, so anybody who has served in the military who was a graduate of Sherman Central School will go on a special plaque that will also be displayed on the Wall of Fame," he said.
The guideline for induction to the Wall of Fame include a direct affiliation with the school, whether it be through enrollment, employment or through service to the school board.
"Any former teachers, any former administrators, any former board members or anybody who did something great while they were here, athletes or someone who got a great academic honor while they were here at Sherman, or then the graduates of Sherman Central School who have gone out into the world and have done something that we feel positively impacts the world at large are able to be nominated," he said.
The school board will then select the individuals from the nominations. A special ceremony will honor the inductees.
"We are going to be having a special induction dinner for the Wall of Fame that is going to be held at Celebration Hall in Mayville in October," he said.
The dinner will be open to the public, as well as the family and friends of those inducted.
For the first five years, five nominees will be selected. Each year following, three nominees will be selected, he said. Any nominations that are made, are kept on file indefinitely and will be considered each year for induction.
The Board of Education will be providing plaques, one for the wall and one for the inductee.
Nomination forms are currently available at the district office, the Community Bank of Sherman, the Sherman Post Office or the district's website. The deadline for application is Sept. 3.
