Fire Crews Have Busy Day

April 3, 2010
By Robert Rizzuto rrizzuto@post-journal.com

With the temperature peaking around 80 degrees Friday, the Jamestown Fire Department responded to several calls in the city, although none were considered serious.

Just before 9 a.m., firefighters were called to investigate smoke in the area of the railroad tracks between the old Dahlstrom's factory and Dawson Metal. Crews responded and found a couple of locals fishing in the Chadakoin River next to a camp fire they built.

The fire was put out and the fishermen were advised that creating such fires is against the city code.

Then around 11:30 a.m., firefighters were called to investigate an electrical fire at Robo Enterprises car wash and offices on East Second Street near Falconer. According to Battalion Chief Roger Sigular, a malfunction caused some wiring to burn up inside the business's utility room.

The issue was taken care of in minutes although the repair likely took more time.

Then around 1:40 p.m., firefighters were called to Spruce Street where a two-vehicle accident was reported and one of the drivers requested to be taken to the hospital. As crews were on their way to the scene, a second call came in from a Pine Street resident reporting smoke inside the home.

The Pine Street incident turned out to be a case of burnt food, as the resident put something into the oven, turned it on and then left the house.

At the scene of the accident on Spruce Street, a woman driving a gray Chevy 1500 pick-up truck was taken to WCA Hospital after she collided with a female pulling out of a driveway in a late-model Honda Accord. The injuries seemed minor, according to a city police officer at the scene.

Then around 2:35 p.m., police were called to investigate smoke inside another home, but it turned out to be a burnt bagel.

With most municipal entities closed in observance of Good Friday, the Jamestown fire and police departments were open for business and responding to calls for service throughout the day.
