Jamestown firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze at a Newland Avenue home Friday afternoon, and the cause is under investigation.
Around 2:30 p.m., the family living at 220 Newland Ave., which is located between Broadhead Avenue and South Main Street, called 911 to report smoke in the house.
"The mother had went into the kitchen and she saw smoke. She got the rest of the family outside and called 911," said Administrative Battalion Chief Bill Johnston. "Station 3 was open, and since it's only a block away, they were the first ones on the scene."
Minutes later, fire crews from Station 1, located underneath city hall, arrived on the scene. A BPU crew happened to be in the neighborhood, and disconnected power to the home.
Within minutes, the fire was out and firefighters were checking the house for extension.
"The fire was confined to the basement and kitchen, and at this point, it doesn't look too bad," Johnston said at the scene Friday. "Two adults and three youths were displaced however, and will be staying with family."
