Allen Short, president of Short & Smith Insurance Association, recently received the Paul Harris Fellow Award during the Greater Jamestown A.M. Rotary Club meeting.
A citation, accompanied by a pin and medallion was presented to Short by Linda Knight, A.M. Rotary club president, and Bill Briggs, A.M. Rotary Foundation chair.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905.
The award is one of the most meaningful ways Rotary honors member Rotarians and citizens who provide support to their communities and around the world.
Short has served as executive director of the LINKS Charity LPGA Pro-Am Golf Tournament that raises money in support of the WCA Cancer Treatment Center for 19 years. He was instrumental in facilitating the LINKS Charity tournament to raise more than $600,000 to date in the fight against local cancer. Through Short's generosity, the Allen Short Cancer Education Screening Fund was formed to support community-wide cancer education initiatives in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.
A longtime supporter of WCA Hospital, Short spearheaded WCA Hospital's $9 million dollar capital campaign in 2001 to upgrade its facility as its campaign co-chair with Peter Sullivan.
A graduate of Colgate University, Short has been a financial representative of Northwestern Mutual since 1952. A supporter of many local organizations, Short is a trustee of the Jamestown Community College Foundation Board and board member of Jamestown Community College. He was recipient of the John D. Hamilton Community Service Award in 2004 for his support of Jamestown Community College. Past president of the New York State Golf Association, Short also served as president of Moon Brook Country Club. He served as chairman of the Chautauqua Institution's Fund Drive and president of Estate Planning Council Chautauqua Region Life Underwrites.
A member of the American Society of Financial Professionals, he was presented the Northwestern Mutual Community Service Award. He is a current member of the Sportsman Club.
Short is married to his wife, Elaine, and is a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award was established in honor of Paul Harris in 1957 to recognize another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose in building world understanding and peace. Paul Harris Fellows do not have to be Rotarians.
